Family Selection Criteria
Need for decent, affordable housing:
Your present housing doesn't meet your family's needs. It may be in poor condition, unhealthy, unsafe, too costly, too small, inaccessible to some family members, etc.
Your total family income is less than the following Low Income Cutoffs as defined by Statistics Canada (2008):

Ability to pay for and maintain a house:
You have had a steady income for at least two years, but are unable to afford or obtain a conventional mortgage. Your income (from employment and/or disability) must be more than $20,000 because you must have monthly income to cover mortgage, property tax and insurance payments. Monthly expenses, including utilities, should not exceed 35 to 40% of the family’s gross monthly income.
You must have a satisfactory credit history demonstrating that you are able to meet your financial obligations and that you are able to manage your debt.
In the case of a prior bankruptcy, it must have been discharged at least two years prior to your application.
Willingness to partner with Habitat and to support Habitat’s objectives:
You are willing to contribute at least 500 hours of sweat equity on the building of your own house and/or other habitat houses and/or activities approved by the Family Partner Committee before moving in to the Habitat home. Extended family and friends, community and faith groups can help you to earn some of these sweat equity hours.
Attendance is expected at education programmes on budgeting, home repair and maintenance.
You have lived in North Bay Blue Sky Region for at least two years and are prepared to be a good neighbour and a responsible member of your community.
You are able to provide references from three non-related people who know you well enough to recommend your willingness to partner and your ability to pay for and maintain a home.
Additional references may be required from your employer, landlord and bank.
